Rock paitings + Inca trail
This hike offer some quality hiking time!! High altitude (<3650m) + fantastic views over the Crater of Maragua. In the morning we drive about 1 hour to be dropped off at Chataquila from where we start the tour 12km hike to the rock paintings Incamachay and Pumamachay.
The rock shelter of Incamachay and the cave of Pumamachay are decorated with paintings and also some engravings.
They are prehispanic (except for some recent graffiti), but its exact age has not yet been established. They were probably made by the Sauces and Huruquilla cultures, between 2500 and 1500 years old.
Before the hiking you will get your lunch box and lunch time is usually planned at the rockpaintings, but that is flexible. Make sure that you bring with you enough water for the day as it is a very long, but wonderful hike!!
After lunch we’ll continue hiking, 5 km mostly going down (YES) through planting fields and typical houses. The car will be waiting for us in the little community of Tumpeka. Before we reach Tumpeka we have to cross a hanging bridge which is used by the locals for exchange of products, and if the bridge is damaged the guide chose another way (1h30min hike more) to reach the car.
Then the car will drive us up a bit in order to start the 4 km Inca Trail uphill: the only known remaining part of the incatrail-network covering the region which was not destroyed by the Spanish conquistadores.. Once you finish hiking (up) te Inca Trail, you will get back to the car and drive back to Sucre, where a free drink in the Joy Ride bar will be waiting for you!!
Don’t forget to wear good hiking shoes, to bring a small backpack to carry your lunch, a camera, enough water (!!), extra snacks, sun block, a hat and some money.
Mind you: This is a high altitude trekking. You have to be reasonably fit and with a not too hangover...
